Coming Attraction

Here's a preview of what's to come this weekend, which is going to be our first official traditional family camping trip. (Is it possible to have a first of a traditional event?) This is our dry run of the the tent set up.

David's instructions went something like this:
David: Archer, you can help me set up the tent?
Archer: Why?
David: So we know everything's ready for the camping trip this weekend.
Archer: Why?
David: Archer, move out of the way.
Archer: Why?
David: Archer, get off the tent so I can set it up.
Archer - walks all over the tent
David: Everett, get off the tent!
Amy: Do you guys need some help?
Shelly: Oooh... aaahhh... ooohhh!

Good work on the practice run for camping! I have lots of memories from being a kid and mom and dad taking us camping. The one that sticks out the most is when we were on a full blown camping trip with all of mom's side. I'm not sure where we were exactly, but I do remember Aunt Patti being there with Matt, Thad and Lisa. All I remember about that camping trip was that Matt slammed his thumb in the car door...or maybe someone slammed the door on his thumb...anyways- it was obviously a traumatic event in my mind.
One of the other memories of traveling with the family I have is when we were driving in the car with mom, dad, Amy and Leah...yes- you know what story I'm talking about. We were on the road after a big breakfast, and Leah wasn't feeling well. She was sitting in the middle of the back seat with Amy and me on either side. She said she wasn't feeling so good, and before we knew what to do she had her hands up by her mouth, and was trying to spare us from the (you know what) from getting all over the backseat...it was not a pretty picture. Poor Leah...

Denise, I remember that camping trip with the whole family, was that the one where you got a tick on your arm? I remember waking up in the morning to hearing you crying cause Dad was trying to get it off. And I thought the thumb in the car door was you, not Matt. But maybe that was a different trip. On one of those trips it was Jim's birthday and we made a "sponge cake" with trick candles.

The Leah story happened after we had eaten at a resturant where the eggs and bacon were served on the "rare" side, and after it happened I remember we all sat on the side of the road and laughed about it while Mom cleaned out the car. Mom was always such a trooper to take care of stuff like that without complaining, she just got out the towels or whatever and did it.

Amy- I think you might be right about me also slamming my finger in the car door...maybe both Matt and I did...maybe I don't remember it as clear as I thought. Anyways- I remember the sponge cake also, I thought it was so cool at the time!

One of big Holmes camping outings was at Council Grounds in Merrill before a Behrens reunion. At that one, we invited everyone out to our camp and I made breakfast for everyone after some rain and storms had blown through overnight. Denise got her hands slammed in the car doors more than I care to remember, so there is no way to pinpoint any particular event. The infamous "Leah Incident" was near Wild Cat Mountain state park and yes, raw bacon seemed to be the culprit. The birthday sponge cake episode was at Governor Dodge state park and was followed by one of James's very bad asthma attacks. Matt had a huge blow up gator that we took to the beach with us there. Funny how the mishaps on these outings become the thing that locks the trip into your memory forever.

I remember that big gator!!! I was so jealous of it, and wanted to play with it so bad! Good memories...

Where was the place that had a lake with an island in the middle? And there was a rope that you could swing out over the water on, and it was a big deal that I was big enough to swing on the rope (sorry Denise, I think you were too little...).

Dad, you've told me before that your earliest memories are of childhood traumas, not surprising that our memories are of injuries, people getting sick, not getting to do something that someone else got to do, etc.

You're going to have a blast! I did this back in March with my wife, my 9 y/o niece, and my kids 3 & 7. Everyone told me that the 3 year old was too young and that you shouldn't take little kids out camping. Nonsense! It was way more fun with the little ones around. Enjoy!
