Jars

Yesterday's "question of the day" (see the link on the right) was "What would you keep in a jar?" I would keep buttons, baby socks, change (don't we all do that?), and I'd like to start keeping dollar bills in a jar to save for a rainy day. But most people answered intangible things like "acceptance, love, forgiveness." And if I were to pick one of those things, it would be sunshine, or the sunshiney feeling from spending time with people I love.

Today Denise, James, Mom, Dad and I were all together to help open the pool. And somehow this amazing thing happened - the job that we all dreaded when we were kids and tried to escape and complained through and hated turned into a great time where we all laughed and had good conversation and got the job done in record time. If I could keep days in jars, I would keep today in a jar. And I might even keep a jar next to it that had one of those days from so long ago when we hated the job, just to remind me of how things can turn around and perspectives can change and turn something unpleasant into something we all enjoyed.

What would you keep in a jar?

I have a ceramic dish on a shelf in my bedroom next to where I keep my keys and billfold. And in that dish (similar to the jar) is an unusual assortment of momentos. 1. A belt buckel from a belt that is now to small for me, but I am hoping I will be able to wear sometime in the future. 2. A green plastic bracelet from when we came together as a family to support a sister who donated a kidney to her brother. 3. A jackknife I received as a gift from my new son-in-law shortly after he married AmyMay. 4. Golf teas that were left in my pocket from when I used to play golf 3 years ago. (This is in the same category as the belt) 5. A metal pin that says Christopher Banks MS Walk 2005 on the front. 6. A button off a couch cushion from the first couch my wife and I bought together after we were married. 7. A small tube of ointment for a rash that keeps coming back on my elbow. 8. A small superball, whose reason for being in the dish is unknown.

In another jar (called my head) I have made a note to especially remember yesterday too. In suburban life, the opportunities for families, including the kids, to all work together on something rarely comes along. And when it does, usually there are one or more party poopers who ruin the day for everyone. Yesterday, 5 adults and one 3 year old supervisor worked hard and kept smiles on their faces the whole time. Either the kids are just feeling sorry for dAd and his failing health or we have entered a new era of peace and happiness. Thanks kids for making it a beautiful day.
